Sinusitis can be treated with proper medications. But at times the patient and the physicians find that the infections are recurrent and non responsive to the medication. In such cases the sinus surgery becomes necessary. In such surgery the openings are enlarged to drain out the sinuses. The surgical procedures for removal of sinus vary according to the clinical history of the patient and the best surgery options.
There are mainly three types of sinus surgeries which include
Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS): This surgery was developed couple of decades back and this nasal endoscope has revolutionized the sinus surgery. The FESS involves the insertion of the endoscope which is a very thin fiber-optic tube, into the nose of the patient for a direct visual examination of the openings into the sinuses. Wit the assistance from the latest technologies and state of the art micro-telescopes and instruments, abnormal and obstructive tissues are removed. In the FESS surgery, the surgical procedure is performed entirely through the nostrils, leaving no external scars and thus eliminating the time loss in healing. After the surgery there is only little swelling and mild discomfort.
Image Guided Surgery: The main concern while inserting the fiber optic tube into the sinus region is the closeness of the sinus to eyes, brain and the major arteries. Today the image guided endoscopic surgery is reducing the risk involved, if any, in the surgery and making the whole process lot more secure.
Caldwell Luc Operation: Another beneficial option in the chronic sinus surgery is the Caldwell Luc operation in which the chronic sinusitis are relived by improving the drainage of the maxillary sinus, one of the cavities beneath the eye.
